Iranian Ta’zieh Performers to Commemorate Ashura
Tehran’s Niavaran Cultural Complex will host performances of Ta’zieh which is the reenactment of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein's family during the month of Muharram on the lunar calendar year.
The program will wrap up on the day of Ashura, which marks the climax of the mourning ceremonies and the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D.
The performers will come from the central city of Khansar, which is known for its long history in presenting traditional Persian passion plays in the country.
As a national and religious dramatic musical performance, Ta’zieh recounts religious events, historical and mythical stories and folk tales through poetry, recitation, music, song and motion.
Ta’zieh rituals symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity's struggle against tyranny. It was registered on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and 72 of his loyal companions, were martyred on Ashura in the Battle of Karbala against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid I, in 680 AD. Imam Hussein (AS) was killed after he refused to pledge allegiance to the tyrant ruler.
