Large Number of Daesh Terrorists Killed in IRGC Missile Attack on Syria’s Deir az-Zor
According to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) that launched the missiles, a large amount of the terrorists’ weapons, ammunition, and equipment were also destroyed.
The attack took place in retaliation for the recent terrorist attacks in Tehran claimed by Daesh, the IRGC said in a statement.
"The spilling of innocent blood will not go unanswered.”
On June 7, gunmen mounted almost simultaneous assaults on Iran’s Parliament and the Mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, killing 17 innocent people.
The IRGC added that the medium-range ground-to-ground missiles were launched from Iran’s western provinces of Kermanshah and Kordestan.
It further assured the Iranian nation that it will "spare no efforts to defend the national security and obviate plots as well as anti-security phenomena.”
The news of the attack immediately made the headlines worldwide.
In its report, Bloomberg cited Leader of the Islamic Revolution Sayyed Ali Khamenei who said early in the day that "everyone should know” that Iran’s enemies "cannot slap us, we will slap them in the face.”
CNN noted that the IRGC had vowed revenge for the Tehran attacks and accused Saudi Arabia of supporting Daesh in the twin attacks in Tehran.
Russia’s Sputnik news agency described launching missiles at Daesh positions as not only a retaliation for the terrorist attacks but also a message to Daesh supporters and a response to recent US threats and sanctions move against Iran.
Al Jazeera wrote, "The firing of the missiles, the first in 30 years outside Iran’s own territory, came hours after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a statement on his website, vowed Iran would ‘slap its enemies’.”
Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Gaziantep, near the Syria-Turkey border, called the firing of the missiles a "hugely significant and major development”.
"... it will be very interesting what the reaction is going to be from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United States and Israel, because Iran is saying it can retaliate and it will,” she said.
The Zionist daily Haaretz also said it was the first use of mid-range missiles by Iran in 30 years.
It added that a video showing missile "is currently under examination by Israel, in (an) attempt to understand the details of the incident. It remains unknown if the missiles struck their targets and what effect the strikes could have on the region.”
