TEHRAN (IQNA) – A number of Quranic booths have started operating in Iraq’s Basra province as some pilgrims began their journey on foot to the holy city of Karbala for Arbaeen.

According to Qaaf news agency, as many as 24 Quranic booths have been set up in the province on the way of the pilgrims as part of a Quranic plan for Arbaeen, Ahmed al-Shami, an official in the province said.

He said the plan is being implemented in cooperation with Quran masters of the Shias Awqaf Department as well as Quran teachers of the Dar-ol-Quran Center of the Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

This year, Arbaeen falls on Tuesday, October 30.
