Art is a universal language that Muslims and non-Muslims understand, so it can be used as a major means for fostering the ethical values of Ashura.
This is according to Kuwaiti scholar and researcher Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Al-Ali who, in an interview with IQNA, added that art can be used to introduce the teachings and messages of Ashura to the world.
“We should have poets who can present different aspects of the Imam Hussein (AS) uprising through poetry in languages such as English, Malay, French, etc.”
He said ceremonies held to commemorate Imam Hussein’s (AS) martyrdom are a perfect venue for clarifying the human values of the Ashura event.
“In these ceremonies, which are attended by people from all walks of life, the moral and practical aspects of the event of Ashura are explained. Thus, they are good venues for enhancing people’s knowledge about the example set by Imam Hussein (AS) and about the school of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).
He added that these ceremonies are very effective in spreading the message of Ashura among the youth but they are not the only venues for promoting the Husseini (AS) school.
“Making use of the message of art, including visual arts and theater is also very important. By holding art exhibitions and festivals featuring Ashura, the message of Karbala and its human values can be promoted in different societies.”
Director of the Iran and Persian Gulf Studies department t at Clements University in the UK pointed to charity works during Muharram and said the lunar month of Muharram is a very good opportunity for carrying out charity activities and raising funds for reconstructions and building infrastructure for underdeveloped areas.
He underlined that all the activities related to Muharram should promote and clarify the lessons of Ashura including the lesson of Hayhat Minna Al-Zilla (Woe unto the Wretched).
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali further called for spreading the Husseini (AS) school to the world and said today’s world is in need of reviving moral and human values.
He concluded by saying that Imam Hussein (AS) is not for Muslims only, but the Imam (AS) is a universal character who followed the path of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
