TEHRAN (IQNA) – A bomb attack targeting Shia mourners in northern Iraq left at least three people dead and another 36 wounded.

According to a security source, an explosive-laden car exploded near the convoy of Shia mourners in the town of Tuz Khurma in Salahuddin province on Thursday.

They were commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam, when the blast happened.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorist group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack.

It came as security measures have been beefed up in Iraq ahead of Ashura, the tenth day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram and the climax of the mourning ceremonies.
