TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined the need for strengthening unity in the Muslim world.

Iran’s President Reiterates Enhancing Islamic Unity

Islam is the religion of mercy and compassion and the Holy Quran has urged unity and fraternity among Muslims, Rouhani said in a Sunday meeting in Venezuela with Indonesia’s Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla.

The president added that Iran and Indonesia are the flag-bearers of Islam of compassion and fraternity in the world.

Elsewhere, Rouhani referred to plots hatched by arrogant powers to create tension and conflict in different parts of the Muslim world, and said it is necessary to exercise vigilance in the face of such moves and counter the ideology of violence and extremism in Muslim societies.

The Iranian president described the ongoing situation in the region as concerning, saying that Iran and Indonesia, as two major Muslim countries, have a heavy responsibility to restore peace and stability to the Muslim world and to prevent the killing of even one Muslim.

Rouhani further said that Tehran and Jakarta have very close stances on political and regional issues, urging both sides to improve cooperation, particularly in the economic and banking sectors, to serve their mutual interests.

"Tehran has no limitations in cooperation with Jakarta,” the Iranian president added.

Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, for his part, highlighted the age-old ties between Tehran and Jakarta and said the two sides can have constructive collaborations to establish peace and security in the Muslim world.

The Iranian president was in Venezuela to attend the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit.
