According to al-Yawm al-Sabi website, there are many Quranic software products and digital copies available but al-Azhar seeks to present a copy approved by the center’s scholars.
Muhieddin Afifi, director of the Islamic Research Department said the move is aimed at countering the spread of distorted copies of the Quran used in smartphones.
He said the issue will be discussed in the upcoming assembly of al-Azhar’s scholars.
Scholars believe that in this digital age in which use of smartphones and tablets is growing rapidly and books are used less frequently, efforts should be made to save digital copies of the Quran from any distortion or tampering.
