Programs Marking ‘Mashhad, 2017 Cultural Capital of Muslim World’ Get Underway

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Programs marking northeastern Iranian holy city of Mashhad as the cultural capital of the Islamic world in 2017 were officially launched in the city on Monday.

 

The ceremony was attended by Iranian Culture Minister Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri, Khorasan Razavi Province’s Governor Ali Rashidian and a number of other officials.

During the event, the logo of ‘Mashhad, 2017 Cultural Capital of Muslim World’ was also unveiled.

The culture minister and other officials also paid a visit to the holy mausoleum of Imam Reza (AS) on Monday.

The 7th conference of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) member states, held in Algiers in 2007, selected Mashhad as the cultural capital of the Muslim world in 2017.

Mashhad hosts over 27 million Iranian and some two million foreign pilgrims to holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) every year.

ISESCO was established by the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in May 1979.

With 52 member states, ISESCO is one of the largest international Islamic organizations and specializes in the fields of education, science, and culture. Its headquarters are in Rabat, Morocco.
