Medical sources said that one of the injured suffered from a critical chest wound as he was shot at close range. A spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Locals said that Israeli troops also detained two Palestinian youths.

The circumstances surrounding the clashes remained unclear as of Sunday evening. However, at least three other Palestinians were injured in by Israeli forces earlier on Sunday, during a protest in the Ramallah district in support of imprisoned Palestinian hunger strikers.

Rights groups have routinely condemned Israeli authorities for their use of excessive force against Palestinians with "non-lethal" weapons such as rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas that often result in serious, sometimes fatal, injuries.
