TEHRAN (IQNA) – An old Omani man who cannot read and write is a memorizer of the entire Quran.

Gharib bin Khamis bin Saudi al-Zakwani is now 88 years old.

He started memorizing the Quran at the age of 10 managed to learn the entire Holy Book by heart by 15.

The illiterate man became the prayer leader at the mosque of his home village at the age of 26.

"When I was ten, I started memorizing the Quran with Sheikh Rashid bin Himad al-Riyami. But, because back then there were no schools (in our village), I did not learn how to read and write,” he told Shabiba.com news website.

He said in order to keep in mind the verses he had listened to, he would repeat them over and over again.

"Every day, I would memorize a certain number of verses and repeat them after saying my prayers.”

While it was a long time ago when Gharib memorized the Quran, he knows all verses of the Quran by heart at such an old age.

The Holy Quran is the only religious Scripture that is memorized by its followers.

Innumerable persons in every Muslim community have memorized the Quran since the first day it was revealed.

The Quran has 30 Juzes (parts), 114 Surahs (chapters) and 6,236 verses.
