TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei attended a mourning ceremony Wednesday night held to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

1st Night of Muharram Mourning Held at Imam Khomeini Husseiniyeh

The ceremony was organized at the Imam Khomeini Husseiniyeh (religious center) in Tehran with the participation of senior officials and thousands of mourning people.

It was the first night of mourning this year at the Husseiniyeh for martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

Senior cleric Hojat-ol-Islam Sayyed Ahmad Khatami addressed the event, elaborating on different aspects of Imam Hussein (AS) movement and the lessons of the Ashura uprising.

He said Imam Hussein (AS) began his historic movement with the aim of establishing the rule of the Quran and holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Sunnah.

The Infallible Imam (AS) demonstrated that, if necessary, one should sacrifice his life on the path of defending the Divine religion, he added.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, Mirza Mohammadi and Mansour Arzi recited elegies for the martyrs of Karbala.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his faithful companions.

Imam Hussein (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time, Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
