TEHRAN (IQNA) – Bahrain’s February 14 Youth Coalition slammed the ruling Al Khalifa regime for preventing Shia Muslims from holding Friday prayers in the northwestern town of Diraz, for the 65th week in a row.

Bahraini Coalition Slams Regime for Blocking Friday Prayers

According to Manama Post, regime forces on Friday prevented worshippers from getting to Imam Sadiq (AS) Mosque in the town to hold Friday prayers.

The coalition described the move as signifying the continuation of the regime’s sectarian oppression of part of Bahrain’s society.

Diraz is the hometown of Bahrain’s leading Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim who has been under arrest since May 3 when regime forces stormed into the residence of Sheikh Qassim arresting everyone inside the house.

The raid came a few days after a Bahraini court sentenced Sheikh Qassim to one year in prison.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with security forces resorting to harsh measures against demonstrators.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful protests.
