TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Azerbaijani political analyst said Saudis seek to create political crises in Lebanon with the aim of undermining the Hezbollah resistance movement.

Hariri Case Indicates Saudis’ Scheme to Undermine Hezbollah

Speaking to IQNA, Kanaan Rushanughlu highlighted Hezbollah’s positive role in regional developments, including the fight against terrorists in Syria, and said Riyadh wants to weaken the resistance group.

The recent resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri indicates a new plot against the region hatched by Saudi Arabia and the West, he added.

Hariri resigned last Saturday, saying in a televised broadcast he sensed a plot to target his life.

His resignation statement was made and broadcast from the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Reports say the Saudi regime had ordered Hariri to resign in an effort to destabilize Lebanon.

Top Lebanese government officials and senior sources close to Hariri also believe Saudi Arabia has coerced Hariri into resigning and put him under effective house arrest since he flew to Saudi Arabia over a week ago.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Azerbaijani analyst referred to the move by Saudi Crown Prince Muhamad bin Salman to arrest princes and high-profile figures under the guise of fighting corruption, and said bin Salman’s purpose is to pave the way for ascending to the throne.

He rejected the idea that such moves will make Saudi Arabia a more democratic country, saying they only indicate the crown prince’s thirst for power.
