Samarra is home to al-Askari Shrine, containing the mausoleums of Imam Hadi (AS) and Imam Askari (AS), the tenth and eleventh Shia Imams, respectively.

Monday, the 8th day in the lunar Hijri month of Rabi al-Awwal, marks the martyrdom anniversary of the 11th Imam (AS).

Like every years, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are expected to visit the city this year to mourn the sad occasion.

More than 200 Moukebs (resting places with special facilities and services for pilgrims) have been set up on the road between the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and Samarra, Ali Haydari, a related official said, according to al-Sumaria news agency.

He added that forces from the Iraqi army and police as well as popular forces are also working to ensure security for the pilgrims.
