TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s parliament speaker described defending the rights of the Palestinian people as an Islamic, human and ethical duty.

Addressing the 8th conference of “Gaza, Symbol of Resistance”, Ali Larijani said supporting the Palestinian resistance against Israel is important not just because Palestinians are an oppressed people, but also because Israel is a wicked and trouble-making regime in the region.

Hence, whether you look at it from an Islamic or ethical point of view or from the perspective of national security and national interests, it is necessary to realize that if one does not stand against this regime, it will keep its expansionist agenda, he added.

Larijani further referred to the victory of the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance against Israel in the 33-day war in 2006 and 22-day war in 2009, and said while a coalition of Arab governments had failed to defeat Israel in the past, the resistance achieved victory against the Tel Aviv regime.

The 8th international conference of “Gaza, Symbol of Resistance” was held in the Iranian capital on Tuesday.

The Society for the Defense of Palestinian Nation organized the event in cooperation with Qods news agency.

Representatives from Palestinian resistance movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad as well as the embassies of Iraq, Algeria and Palestine in Tehran were among the participants.

It came a few days after the Gaza Day. January 19 has been designated by the Iranian parliament as the Gaza Day in the Iranian calendar.

The day was named in the aftermath of the resistance put up by the residents of the coastal enclave in the face of the full-scale Israeli invasion which led to Gaza’s victory in the 22-day Gaza War during December 27, 2008-January 18, 2009.
