TEHRAN (IQNA) – The fourth gathering of officials of Quran radio stations in the Islamic world kicked off in the Egyptian capital on January 28.

According to al-Bawaba News, combatting extremism is the main theme of the three-day meeting.

The participants discuss the role of Quran radios in countering extremism and radicalism.

The Islamic Broadcasting Union (IBU) has organized the event in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and Egypt’s National Media Society (NMS).

Addressing the opening ceremony on Sunday, Hussain Zain, head of NMS, elaborated on Egypt Quran Radio’s programs for tackling extremism and the NMS plans in this regard.

Egypt’s grand mufti, Shawki Allam, talked about countering the ideology of extremism, and Aslam Syedi Mustafa, a Muslim scholar from Mauritania’s speech was on ways to fight extremism.

Quran radio officials from countries such as Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania and Malaysia are present at the meeting.

It seeks to raise awareness about the importance of radio programs in countering extremism and fostering the culture of moderation.

The gathering is also aimed at promoting the role of Quran radio stations in the Islamic world in publicizing the values of Islam among the youth, and redressing the media smear campaigns against Islam and Muslims living in non-Muslim communities.

Also, the meeting is aimed at identifying the technical and knowledge challenges facing the Quran stations in the Islamic world, exploring ways to boost cooperation, coordination and expertise sharing among these radio stations, in order to disseminate the right information about Islam and publicize its values.

The first such meeting was held in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, in 2013.
