TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Bahraini lawyer said Shia religious books have been banned in prisons in the Persian Gulf island country.

According to Mirat al-Bahrain website, Rim al-Shaalan in a post on his Twitter account wrote that a list has been introduced of the Shia books that are banned in prisons.

He said the books include Mafatih al-Jinan, Makarim al-Akhlaq, Sahifet Sajjadiyeh, and al-Tariq Ila Allah.

Shaalan wondered what could be wrong with prisoners reading such books that are beneficial for any Muslim no matter to which school of thought they belong.

He described the move as an example of violation of freedom of conscience in the country.

Bahrain has been the scene of anti-regime protests on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.

The protesters, mostly from the majority Shia population, are demanding that the Al Khalifa regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.

Manama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain in its crackdown.

Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries or got arrested as a result of the Al Khalifa regime’s crackdown.

Bahrain has also stripped hundreds of their citizenship, and has jailed dozens of high-profile activists and religious clerics over the past seven years.
