TEHRAN (IQNA) – Muslims across the world will soon be preparing for the holy month of Ramadan.

In the United Kingdom, Ramadan is set to start on the evening of Tuesday, May 15, and will last through the evening of Thursday, June 14, according to the Muslim Council of Britain.

Britain’s 2.7 million Muslims will not eat or drink between sunrise and sunset, in order to devote themselves to their faith and ultimately become closer to God.

The start and end of the month in Britain is based on a sighting of the first crescent of the new moon in Mecca.

Ramadan can last from 29 to 30 days, during which time Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

Ramadan is not only a month for Muslims to abstinence from food and drink, it is also a time for spiritual cleansing and reflection.
