TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei referred to unity and progress in scientific fields as the most important need of the Islamic world today.

“Today, awakening has been created in the Muslim world and despite attempts by westerners to deny it, this awakening paves the way for more tendency toward Islam and promises a better future,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in an address to participants in a congress on “Role of Shia Islam in Development of Islamic Sciences”.

The Leader added that it is of paramount importance for the Muslim world to move toward enhanced unity and progress in sciences.

The main reason for many Muslim world countries to be dominated by others is scientific backwardness, Ayatollah Khamenei stressed, saying that it should change through Muslim states’ scientific development.

“The Muslim world can once again be at the peak of human civilization,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to Iran as a successful example of moving on the path of scientific progress, noting that Iran’s speed on this path has been 13 times the global average according to reports by international scientific centers.

The Leader underlined that Iran will continue its move on this path and that, unlike the West, the Islamic Republic is ready to share its scientific achievements with other Muslim countries.

Prior to Ayatollah Khamenei’s statements, Hojat-ol-Islam Rezaei, secretary of the congress on “Role of Shia Islam in Development of Islamic Sciences” presented a report on the objectives and programs of the scholarly event.

The congress was held in the holy city of Qom, south of Tehran, on Thursday and Friday.

Scholars and thinkers from Iran and 50 other countries took part in the gathering.
