Leader Pardons, Commutes Prison Terms of Convicts on Occasion of Eids
The Leader granted the clemency upon a request by Judiciary Chief Hojat-ol-Islam Ebrahim Raisi on the occasion of two major religious festivals, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir.
Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or commute the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the country’s Judiciary chief.
Eid –al-Adha, marked last Monday, is one of Islam’s holiest festivals celebrated annually around the world and an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries.
In the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha occurs on the 10th day of the lunar month of Dhu al-Hijjah and is also the third day of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
For Muslims, Eid al-Adha commemorates the day when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was going to sacrifice his son but was instructed by God to offer an animal instead. Eid al-Adha in Arabic literally means “festival of the sacrifice”.
The event of Ghadir, or Eid al-Ghadir, is celebrated by Shia Muslims around the world every year. It is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul Hijja in the lunar Hijri calendar.
It was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God.
This year, Eid al-Ghadir falls on Tuesday, August 20.
