Holding strong feelings of love and sympathy between spouses is an admired human characteristic emphasized by God that depends to a large extent on observing mutual rights by couples.
This is according to Ayatollah Ali Moallemi, representative of people of Mazandaran Province in the Assembly of Experts, who highlighted the ‘family’ as the smallest social community, which, like the larger society, should be governed through specific rules and regulations based on fair, reasonable human relations.
“According to the religious teachings, spouses are required to observe emotional and ethical codes in their family life,” he went on to say, adding that commitment to such principles would help them respect one another’s rights and fulfill their responsibilities accordingly.
“Any misconduct or disrespect for the conjugal rights will not only endanger married life but will also leave negative effects on children, getting them into serious troubles in future.”
Ayatollah Moallemi further noted that the spouses’ rights would necessitate certain responsibilities for each of them that must be fulfilled according to religious teachings.
Referring to Verse 21 of Surah Room saying “and of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, that you might reside with them, and has put kindness and mercy between you. Surely, there are signs in this for those who think”, he highlighted the Divine emphasis on love and affection between spouses toward one another which is mainly rooted in their respect for each other’s rights.
He also quoted some Hadiths by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) that urge both man and woman to observe spousal rights and always be kind and sympathetic to one another.
