TEHRAN (IQNA) – The blessed month of Ramadan, lauded as the month of the Holy Quran, is the best opportunity to get closer to the divine book and contemplate its verses.

Those who read the Quran are recommended to observe some manners so as to draw more benefits and rewards from their act. The book “Kanz al-Maram fi Amal Shahr al-Siyam” has pointed out to some of these manners:

1) Purity

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended Muslims to brush their teeth before reciting the Holy Quran.

Meanwhile, Imam Ali (AS) urged people not to recite the Quran without having Wudu (ablution).

2) Sitting towards Ka’aba

It is recommended that people sit towards the holy Ka’aba while reciting the Holy Quran or supplications.

3) Seeking refuge in Allah

Verse 98 of Surah An-Nahl reads: “When you recite the Koran, seek refuge in Allah from the stoned satan.”

People asked Imam Sadiq (AS) how one should seek refuge in God. The Imam said: “say ‘I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the mischief of Satan’.”

4) Tarteel

The word “tarteel” has been mentioned in verse 4 of Surah Al-Muzzammil. Interpreting the verse, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said one should recite the Quran with contemplation and not read the verses just for finishing them.

Imam Sadiq (AS) noted that tarteel means reading the Quran with contemplation and a good voice.

5) Abstaining from talking

Muslims are advised not to talk amid the recitation of the Quran or supplications, except when necessary.

6) Deep thinking

The Holy Quran has stressed the need to think deeply about the verses: “It is a Blessed Book that We have sent down to you (Prophet Muhammad) so that those possessed with minds might ponder its verses and remember.” (Surah Sad, verse 29)

“Will they not then contemplate on the Koran? Or are there locks upon their hearts!” reads verse 24 of Surah Muhammad.

In Sermon 193 of Nahj al-Balagha, Imam Ali describe the righteous like this: “If they come across a verse creating eagerness (for Paradise) they pursue it avidly, and their spirits turn towards it eagerly, and they feel as if it is in front of them. And when they come across a verse which contains fear (of Hell) they bend the ears of their hearts towards it, and feel as though the sound of Hell and its cries are reaching their ears.”

7) Implementing the Quran

All the rewards for reciting, writing, and teaching the Quran are aimed at getting acquainted with the truth and implementing the concepts and teachings of the Holy Quran.

8) Reciting the Quran regularly

In a part of his long will to his son Muhammad Hanafiyyah, Imam Ali (AS) says: May it be upon you to recite the Qur'an, practice its teachings, observe its obligations and commandments, follow what is permissible and what is forbidden, its commands and prohibitions, and reciting it every day and night, … so it is obligatory for every Muslim to look at his promise every day, even by reciting fifty verses.
