In the Supplication of the 14th day of Ramadan we read: “O Allah: on this day, (please) do not blame me for my slips, And (please) excuse me on this day for my wrong deeds and flaws; And do not expose me on this day to misfortunes and calamities; Out of Your might; O the Might of the Muslims.”
One may be on the path of obeying God and the right path, without having any intention of committing sins. But sometimes he may have some slips. That is why we ask God not to reprimand us for these slips that we may have during our lifetime.
We read in the Holy Quran: “Our Lord, do not take us to account if we have forgotten, or made a mistake.” (Verse 286 of Surah Al-Baqarah)
Imam Ali (AS) says in Sermon 183 of Nahj al-Balagha: “You should know that this thin skin cannot tolerate the Fire (of Hell). So, have pity on yourselves.”
The Commander of the Faithful (AS) also says in Dua of Kumayl: “And nullify my slips. And forgive my lapses! For You hast decreed Your worship for Your servants. And commanded them to supplicate You. And assured them that they would be answered.”
Some of the reasons mentioned by the Quran for exposing people to tribulations and calamities include: 1- Making people humble 2- Examining people’s faith and patience 3- Tribulations may be the outcome and reflection of one’s sins 4- They help to elevate people 5- They help people wake up from ignorance and negligence
Aziz in this supplication means mighty and undefeatable. God is undefeatable and Izza (might, greatness) belongs to Him. We ask God that, out of His might, He would excuse us on this day for our wrong deeds and flaws and would not expose us to misfortunes and calamities.
According to a Hadith from the Holy Prophet (PBUH), God says everyday: “I am Aziz. So if anyone wants the Izza of the two world, he should obey the Aziz”.
And it has been narrated from Imam Hassan Mujtaba (AS) who said anyone who wants to be Aziz should abandon the disgrace of sins and resort to the Izza of obeying God.
