Sheikh Adnan, an activist affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, passed away in an Israeli prison on Tuesday after nearly three months on hunger strike.
Speaking to IQNA, Davoud Shihab, head of the movement’s information dissemination center in the Gaza Strip, said Sheikh Adnan was an outstanding and influential figure among Palestinian people, especially the youth.
He said the martyr had begun his political activity as a university student in Ramallah and was appointed as Islamic Jihad spokesperson in the West Bank during the 2000 Intifada.
He noted that Sheikh Adnan was arrested and jailed by the Zionist regime 13 times over the years.
He went on hunger strikes five times during his time in Israeli prisons and is known as the founder of hunger strike uprising of Palestinian prisoners, Shihab stated.
He added that Martyr Adnan was known for his steadfastness and perseverance in defending rights and became a great leader in Islamic Jihad.
According to Shihab, Sheikh Adnan was married and had 9 children. He was last arrested by the Zionist forces in February 2023 and immediately started a hunger strike. He did not eat or drink anything except water for 86 days and was martyred in his cell in the occupation regime’s prisons on Tuesday.
Shihab described what happened to Sheikh Adnan as an outright crime and said he was intentionally killed by the Zionists who denied him medical care.
He said the entire Muslim Ummah and all freedom-seeking people in the world must fulfil their responsibilities regarding Palestinian prisoners who have paid a high price for defending the holy city of al-Quds and Palestine.
Shihab further referred to the missile attacks on occupied territories by Palestinian resistance movements following the martyrdom of Sheikh Adnan and said this was just the beginning and more is to come.
Sheikh Adnan died in an Israeli prison after nearly three months on a hunger strike.
He “refused to undergo medical tests and receive medical treatment” and “was found unconscious in his cell” in the early morning on Tuesday, the Zionist regime’s prison service said.
Adnan began his hunger strike shortly after being arrested on February 5.
He had gone on hunger strike several times after previous arrests, including a 55-day strike in 2015 to protest his arrest under so-called administrative detention, in which suspects are held indefinitely by the Israeli regime without charge or trial.
