The competition began in the African country on Thursday with the participation of more than 340 contenders in the preliminary stage.
Forty-five contestants with the best performance will make it to the final round, according to the organizers.
The contest is being held in the categories of memorization of the Holy Quran, Hadith sciences, Islamic Fiqh, and Seerah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
The Islamic Teachings and Studies Higher Education Institute is hosting the Quranic event.
Mauritania’s Minister of Islamic Affairs Dah Ould Sidi Ould Amar Taleb said at the opening ceremony that his ministry has taken the necessary measures in coordination with the country’s scholars to ensure that the competition is organized in accordance with clear standards.
He added that the contest plays an important role in promoting Quranic and religious teachings in the country.
