The Hajj rituals are not only among the purest and most profound acts of worship, but also effective means for advancement of Islam’s political goals.

The essence of worship is attention to God and the essence of politics is attention to God’s servants (people) and these two are combined in Hajj in such a way that it seems they are integrated.

Hajj is an effective factor in strengthening Muslim unity. It is effective in confronting nationalist prejudices and racism.

Hajj is also effective in breaking censorship and thwarting the oppression of people by oppressive regimes.  It is a venue for exchanging and spreading political news among Muslims from all over the world.

And Hajj is effective in the breaking of the bonds of captivity and colonialism and the liberation of Muslims.

That is why rulers such as those of the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties would monitor every contact of Muslims during the Hajj in order to suppress any liberation movement.
