IQNA – Germany recorded more than 1,550 incidents of anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2024, according to official statistics released by the Interior Ministry on Friday.

The figures, which were made public in response to a parliamentary inquiry from Petra Pau, a lawmaker from the opposition Left Party, reveal a troubling rise in Islamophobic violence and discrimination.

The data shows that at least 54 mosques were targeted by attackers between January and December last year, and 53 individuals were injured in incidents of anti-Muslim violence.

These crimes ranged from physical assaults and property damage to social media harassment, threatening letters, and the disruption of religious practices, according to the Anadolu Agency.

The number of anti-Muslim attacks recorded in 2024—1,554—represents a slight increase compared to the previous year’s total of 1,536. While the rise is modest, it highlights an ongoing pattern of hate directed at Germany's Muslim population, which stands at nearly 5.5 million, making it the second-largest Muslim community in Western Europe after France.

This uptick in Islamophobic incidents comes amid a broader trend of rising far-right rhetoric and political movements in Germany, including the opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has been fueling anti-Muslim sentiment.

Meanwhile, Germany is not alone when it comes to the rise of anti-Muslim sentiments in the West. The sharp rise in Islamophobic incidents in different countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, and France came as a result of anti-Muslim propaganda waged by Western media outlets in the wake of Israel’s war on Gaza.
