Iraqi Interior Ministry Stresses Success of Ashura Security Plan in Karbala

IQNA – The Iraqi Ministry of Interior issued a statement Sunday afternoon, declaring the success of the security plan for this year’s Ashura mourning ceremonies in Karbala.

The special feature of this year’s Ashura security plan was that it was carried out without the use of any weapons, it said.

The statement added that tens of thousands of foreign pilgrims participated in this year’s Ashura mourning rituals in Karbala, and their entry and exit processes were carried out completely smoothly.

Miqdad Miri, head of the Communications and Media Department of the ministry described this year’s Ashura mourning ceremonies as of the most organized and smoothest in years, both in terms of pilgrim traffic and security and service measures.

The Iraqi official emphasized that the special security and service plan for the Ashura ceremonies was implemented as planned with full discipline and order, under the direct supervision of the Minister of Interior and with the effective field participation of all commanders and staff.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Ministry of Health announced that the ministry’s teams have provided medical services, awareness-raising and relief to more than 12 million Ashura mourners.

It said in a statement that volunteer teams from the Ministry of Health also provided medical, educational, and relief services to pilgrims participating in the Tuwairaj mourning ceremony in Karbala.

The volunteer teams, emphasizing their religious and human commitment to serving the pilgrims of Imam Hussein (AS), expressed their condolences on this occasion and demonstrated the spirit of sacrifice and volunteer work, the ministry said.

The ministry emphasized that it pays special attention to providing and strengthening medical services during such major occasions, and through preventive plans and high-level coordination, it strives to ensure the health of pilgrims and the sanctity of the ceremony.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.

This year, the day of Ashura fell on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
