Sham-e Ghariban, or the “Evening of Strangers,” marks the night following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. It is a time when Shia Muslims commemorate the suffering endured by the Prophet’s family (Ahl al-Bayt) following the tragedy.

The ceremonies, held in cities and towns throughout Iran and in Shia communities worldwide, feature symbolic acts of remembrance. Participants light candles, recite elegies (Rawdha Khani), and in some places, burn symbolic tents — representing those torched by enemy forces on the night of Ashura.
