Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said on Sunday the commemorations follow the adoption of a resolution proposed by Iran at the recent meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers in Istanbul.

According to Gharibabadi, the ministers unanimously endorsed Iran’s initiative to designate the year 1447 AH as a symbolic milestone marking 1500 years since the Prophet’s birth. “The resolution calls on Islamic countries to carry out a variety of activities—cultural, educational, academic, media-related, humanitarian, and charitable—to honor this occasion and promote a correct understanding of Islam and the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH),” he said.

Gharibabadi noted that the resolution highlights Islam as a religion of peace and tolerance.

It also highlights the contributions of Islamic civilization to humanity and calls for greater interfaith dialogue and understanding. “It includes plans to hold several major international events, including in New York and Geneva, and to register this anniversary in UNESCO’s official calendar,” he added.

He stressed that, as the originator of the initiative, Iran would play a leading role in organizing high-profile activities to mark the occasion on the global stage.

The deputy minister also announced that a range of related programs will soon be launched within Iran. He called on non-governmental organizations and the Iranian public to take part in celebrating the "blessed occasion" with the dignity it deserves.
