Plan Introduced to Protect Food Supply in Morocco during Ramadan
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is expected to begin on April 3, when Muslims worldwide observe the Islamic month with fasting from dawn to sunset.
To ensure commodities meet popular demand during Ramadan, Moroccan officials emphasized that the supply of products will be assured in all regions across Morocco.
Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour attended a meeting that Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit chaired to discuss the evaluation and monitoring of the state of supply of foods in the national market.
Mezzour reassured citizens that despite the increase in the consumption of certain basic foodstuffs during Ramadan, the supply of such products is assured in all regions across Morocco.
Mezzour said that the government will ensure that the prices of these products are suitable, to protect the purchasing power of citizens as well as health and consumer safety.
Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests Mohammed Sadiki, said that the meeting dealt with “very crucial issues,” including the domestic market’s supply during Ramadan.
“In the context of the current climatic conditions, all precautions have been taken to supply the markets on a permanent and regular basis, particularly with regard to local national products,” he said.
Regarding prices, the minister stressed that the government has an approach to monitor price fluctuations with the necessary rigor during the blessed month of Ramadan.
Morocco’s reassuring remarks came amid significant rises in prices of important products that are commonly consumed during Ramadan.
Citizens recently launched a hashtag, calling for the end of food price hikes that reduce their expected purchasing power.
The government argued that the situation is due to the global context and economic crisis across the world.
The government further emphasized that it is committed to mitigate the effects of the crisis by subsidizing several products, including flour.
