TEHRAN (IQNA) – An act of vandalism at Hespeler Masjid in Cambridge, Waterloo, has created a sense of uncertainty for community members.

Early Tuesday morning, a window was smashed at MAC Hespeler Masjid.

No one was there at the time, but Waqas Bhutta, the mosque president, said the incident has left some community members feeling uneasy.

“This is unfortunate,” he said. When something like this happens, it brings a sense of uncertainty among worshippers, and “sometimes causes a fear of the unknown.”

“We go there five times a day,” he said, noting the first prayer time of the day takes place before sunrise, wrapping up at 6:15 a.m.

“We try to ask patrons to go in groups” for their own safety, he said.

This is not the first time the mosque on Winston Boulevard has been the target of vandalism. Last year, youths were caught spray-painting the building, he said.

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact officers at 519-570-9777. Anonymous tips can also be left with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
