9th Century Mosque in SW Iran A National Heritage Site

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Jameh Mosque of Shushtar is one of the oldest Muslim places of worship in Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran.

According to historical accounts, it was built in 250 Hijri (864 AD) during the reign of Abbasid Caliphs.

The mosque’s architecture is in the Khorasan style (east of Iran). It has 48 stone pillars and dome ceilings. There are also inscriptions in Thulth, Kufic and Nastaliq calligraphic styles in the mosque.

The Jameh Mosque of Shushtar is in Iran’s National Heritage List.
