TUNIS (IQNA) – The speaker of Tunisia’s parliament condemned acts of Quran burning as provocative and criminal moves.

Tunisia Parliament Speaker Ibrahim Bouderbala

Ibrahim Bouderbala deplored the rising trend of sacrilegious acts targeting Islamic sanctities by extremist groups, saying it is shameful that governments remain indifferent to these despicable measures that openly humiliate Muslims’ beliefs.

He said such provocations have nothing to do with freedom of expression and freedom of conscience and run counter to universal human values.

They would cause an escalation of religious hatred and extremism in the world, he warned.

The Tunisian top lawmaker made the remarks in a virtual forum of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Parliamentary Union.

Bouderbala underscored the need for rejecting violence, hatred and extremism and protecting values.

He called for prompt intervention for putting an end to the incidents of Quran burning and the growing trend of Islamophobia.

He also hailed the passing of a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council to confront religious hatred and described it as a victory of Muslim countries against extremist acts.

Bouderbala also urged more efforts at the international level to enhance global dialogue with the aim of promoting the culture of tolerance and respect for human rights, religions and beliefs.
