IQNA – While there have been many endeavors by Muslim scholars in the field of Quran interpretation since the advent of Islam, there is a lack of work in psychological interpretation of the Holy Book.

Holy Quran

This is according to a report by Al Jazeera, excerpts from which are as follows:

The focus in Quran exegeses since the early years after the revelation of the Holy Book has been on linguistic, Fiqhi (jurisprudential) and religious aspects.

This led to significant research and remarkable progress in linguistics, morphology, and similar fields.

The interpretations have also benefited from different fields of knowledge such as history. But there has been a lack of attention to the science of psychology.

Years ago, Abdul Ghani al-Azhari, a senior Quran scholar at Al-Azhar Islamic University, wrote three articles on psychological interpretation of the Quran which were published by Minbar al-Islam Magazine.

This prompted Mustafa Sadiq al-Rifaei, a renowned Egyptian author, to write a book on the aspects of the Quran’s psychological miracles.

Abdul Wahab Hamuda also touched on this subject in a book titled “The Quran and Psychology”.

Later Muhammad Othman Nijati write a book with the same title. Hamuda’s book discusses the interpretation of the Quran from a psychological perspective whereas Nijati’s work is a thematic interpretation.

Mustafa Mahmoud is another Egyptian Quran expert working in this field. He wrote a book titled “New Quranic Psychology”. In another book, “Secrets of Quran”, he devoted a chapter to Quranic psychology.

Another work in which psychological Quran interpretation is discussed is At-Tafsir al-Mawzuei Lil-Quran al-Kareem (thematic interpretation of the Quran) by Mohamed al-Bihi. He had good knowledge in philosophy and psychology but died before completing this work.

The Quran commentary “Fi Zilal al-Quran” by Sayyid Qutb is arguably the most significant work in the contemporary era which gets close to psychological interpretation of the Quran.

Despite such efforts, there is a lack of interpretational works in which all verses of the Quran are studies from psychological perspectives.
