IQNA – There is an aesthetic and psychological approach to praying and supplication in the verses of the Quran, an Iraqi scholar and researcher says, stressing the importance of the word Rabb (Lord) in this approach.

Praying to God

Hussein Fadhil al-Hulw has written an article on this subject that has been published by the website of the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine, excerpts of which are as follows:

Researcher have largely overlooked the importance of supplications as a kind of literature.

Supplication and prayer have a special status in the first chapter of the Quran, Surah Al-Fatihah.

In the historical references of the Quran, there is also a special view on praying. After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they prayed to God to forgive them:

“Lord, we have done injustice to our souls. If You will not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall certainly have incurred a great loss.” (Vrse 23 of Surah Al-Aaraf)

This is the first prayer of humans. Now who taught Adam and Eve to pray like this and use the word Rabb (Lord)? It was God who taught them how to pray.

As for the word Rabb, it can be considered as a comprehensive name that is a manifestation of all of God’s attributes: His creation, His power, His wisdom and His mercy.

And another important point is that no prayer in the Quran begins without the word Rabb.

Another example is Verse 286 of Surah Al-Baqarah:

“Lord, do not hold us responsible for our forgetfulness and mistakes. Lord, do not lay upon us the burden that You laid on those who lived before us. Lord, do not lay on us what we cannot afford. Ignore and forgive our sins. Have mercy on us. You are our Lord. Help us against the unbelievers.”

The repetition of the word Rabb in this verse implies the hope in God’s mercy and expression of servitude to God as well as an expression of need.

In another Surah in the Holy Book, Prophet Abraham (AS) repeats the word Rabb: “Lord, make me and my offspring steadfast in prayer and accept our worship. Lord, on the Day of Judgment, forgive me and my parents and all the believers.”

So a study of the verses of the Quran shows that the word Rabb has a special feature that is unique from various aspects.
