IQNA – Muslim families affected by the Eaton Fire gathered in Pasadena, California, on Friday to mark the first night of Ramadan, finding solace in their faith after losing their mosque earlier this year.

Jihad Abdus Shakoor, a community member, described the significance of Ramadan during this challenging time. "The fact that Ramadan is coming up in this time period with so much pain and devastation, it couldn't have come at a better time," he said, emphasizing the sense of unity and comfort the holy month brings.

Masjid Al-Taqwa, founded by Jihad’s father, Aaron Abdus Shakoor, over 40 years ago, was among the structures destroyed in January’s wildfire. For the first time in two decades, the family will not be gathering for Ramadan at the mosque in Altadena.

"It's very difficult because it's a place where we pray," Aaron said. "It's a place we have jumah (Friday prayer) and connect."

The wildfire also destroyed the family's home, real estate office, and other properties. Despite the hardships, Aaron remains hopeful. "It's something that you have to make adjustments to, but I'm confident we'll get through all this," he stated.

Efforts to rebuild are underway, with the community raising funds online to support the recovery process. Meanwhile, New Horizon School in Pasadena has stepped in to offer a space for the displaced congregation to observe Ramadan.

"We'll be breaking fast there," Aaron said. "We'll be having our evening prayer."
