Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Abdol Fattah Navab made the remark at a farewell ceremony for the first group of Iranian Hajj pilgrims leaving for Saudi Arabia.
It was held at the Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran on Monday.
Referring to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s emphasis during a meeting with Hajj officials a day earlier on the necessity of understanding and appreciating Hajj and paying attention to its potential, he cited narrations and hadiths from the infallible Imams (AS) about knowledge and cognition in religion.
Stating that Imam Ali (AS) said there is no action or activity that does not require knowledge of it, Hojat-ol-Islam Navab urged all pilgrims to pay special attention to the spiritual understanding of the rituals during the Hajj journey and to make use of the Hajj convoys’ clergy, who are available around the clock to serve the pilgrims.
Self-awareness in religion holds a very special significance, even greater importance compared to knowledge of rituals, because through self-awareness one can also progress in understanding the teachings of the faith, he stated.
He described self-awareness and self-assessment as key prerequisites for personal reform and said that the days of Hajj provide a fundamental and rare opportunity for reflection, self-understanding, and repentance.
