Man Charged with Hate Crime Following Assault on Muslim Woman in New York Subway

A 34-year-old man from Jamaica, Queens, has been formally charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment following an alleged early-morning attack on a Muslim woman aboard a subway train, according to prosecutors.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. Wednesday on an E train near the intersection of Queens Boulevard and 75th Avenue.

Authorities say the man, identified as Naved Durrni, approached the woman and asked about her background and religion. Upon learning that she was Muslim, Durrni allegedly proceeded to physically assault her, striking her multiple times and kicking her in the face while wearing heavy work boots, according to court documents.
Emergency services transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for a fractured eye socket and nasal bone, along with other injuries including swelling and bruising, prosecutors reported.

Durrni allegedly fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by police officers several blocks away. He appeared in court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty. He is currently being held without bail, as stated in court records.
