Pezeshkian made the statements in a message read at a ceremony honoring volunteers and organizers who served pilgrims this year.
The event, held on Wednesday in Tehran, brought together officials, cultural activists, and moukeb organizers who provided services to millions of pilgrims during this year’s Arbaeen procession.
The annual observance marks the fortieth day after Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Arbaeen has become one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, attracting more than 21 million participants this year from Iraq, Iran, and beyond.
In his written message, President Pezeshkian described Arbaeen as “one of the most vital pillars of Shia culture” and a movement inspired by the values of Ashura.
“This remarkable event has transcended all geographical, historical, and ideological boundaries, bringing together people from every faith and background who share devotion to these sacred values,” he said.

He called Arbaeen “a unique identity-building transformation” with immense cultural and spiritual potential.
“The Arbaeen pilgrimage is a journey toward the future,” Pezeshkian said. “Its true essence lies in the awakening it brings to pilgrims — a transformation in insight that defines the heart of this movement.”
The president also praised the tireless efforts of those who served the pilgrims. “Serving Arbaeen pilgrims and providing the necessary infrastructure and support is participation in this great transformation,” he said. “It is a task that cannot be accomplished without love and sincere intention.”
According to Iranian officials, more than 2,700 moukebs (service stations) from Iran helped accommodate over 22 million pilgrim-days during this year’s Arbaeen. They distributed around 113 million meals along the pilgrimage routes.

Pezeshkian expressed hope that the pilgrimage, which grows in scale each year, would continue to promote peace and understanding. “I hope this magnificent movement, which each year is held more gloriously than before, will bring hearts closer together and strengthen the unity of free nations,” he said.
He added that Arbaeen, inspired by the “eternal message of Ashura,” should guide societies “on the path of truth, justice, human dignity, and a community filled with love and empathy.”
