Majid Namjoo, Secretary of the Public Participation, Accommodation, and Catering Committee for Arbaeen, shared these updates during a press conference held on Monday, at the committee’s headquarters in Tehran.
He said preparations are well underway for Arbaeen 1446 AH (2025), with just two months remaining. “The most important logistical effort involves dispatching 7,000 to 8,000 trucks from all provinces in Iran,” Namjoo said. “These vehicles will carry supplies for the moukebs across the Shalamcheh, Khosravi, and Mehran border crossings into Iraq.”
Arbaeen is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Millions of Shia Muslims from around the globe travel to Karbala, Iraq, to mark the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The walk to Karbala is supported by moukebs—voluntary service stations that offer food, shelter, and medical aid free of charge.

Namjoo said that nearly 200,000 volunteers will be involved in running over 3,000 moukebs. “Out of these, about 1,800 are based in Iraq and 1,200 in Iran. In addition, we have 338 shared moukebs in Iraq, operated jointly to maximize service delivery,” he explained.
“Our goal is to keep the spirit of the Arbaeen movement rooted in the people,” he said. “The official starting time for moukeb operations will be announced by the Central Arbaeen Committee, but they typically begin from the 10th of Safar and continue until the 23rd to accommodate late-returning pilgrims.”
Namjoo also highlighted measures to reduce food waste and minimize environmental damage. “Neighboring moukebs are encouraged to coordinate with each other for meal planning and snack distribution,” he said. “We’ve already held regional workshops and plan to organize four more in Tehran, Shiraz, Kermanshah, and Ilam before Arbaeen.”

To improve quality and hygiene standards, Namjoo added, “We are using modern technology and startup innovations to enhance service delivery and food safety. Both our team and Iraq’s Ministry of Health will rigorously monitor conditions to ensure pilgrims’ health is protected.”
