IQNA – An exhibition of Islamic and Quranic calligraphy by Sri Lankan artist Amir Faisal was held at Colombo’s Perera Gallery.

The exhibition, hosted by the Perera Gallery at the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo on October 11 and 12, featured contemporary works that blend traditional Islamic calligraphy with modern design elements.

The event was inaugurated by Mohammad Hossein Mozaffari, head of Iran’s Cultural Center in Sri Lanka, and A.M. Ashraf, adviser to the Prime Minister, as part of ongoing efforts to promote artistic and cultural collaboration.

Amir Faisal, known for his abstract interpretations of calligraphic forms, reimagines traditional scripts into expressive and visually engaging designs that bridge spirituality and modern aesthetics.

His works draw inspiration from Quranic verses and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), while also incorporating street art influences and graffiti-inspired techniques.

The exhibition highlighted the dynamic fusion of traditional Islamic calligraphy and contemporary urban art, showcasing how the medium can evolve as both an artistic expression and a reflection of lifestyle.

Co-organized by An Nooriyyeh Calligraphy Academy Iran’s Cultural Center, the event underscored the role of calligraphy in preserving cultural identity and promoting creative dialogue within Sri Lanka’s growing visual arts scene.
