1,266 Qaris to Compete in Qatar’s Katara Int’l Quran Award

IQNA – The Katara Cultural Foundation in Qatar announced that the 9th edition of the Katara Prize for Holy Quran Recitation, which will be held under the theme “Decorate the Quran with your voices”, has received 1,266 applications.

The total number of participants in the 9th edition of the contest will be 1,266, of whom 655 will be representatives from 17 Arab countries and 611 participants from 46 other countries. Al-Sharq reported. 

Egypt, Sudan and Somalia top the list of Arab countries with the highest number of participants.

The countries of the Arab Maghreb countries are in second place with 210 participants, and the Levant and Iraq with 92 participants are in third place, while the number of participants from the Persian Gulf countries has reached 37.

According to the report, the selection committee will evaluate all participants and select the top 100 contestants to advance to the preliminary round, slated to be held in Doha.

These 100 contestants will compete in 20 televised episodes of the competition, with five contestants competing in each episode. One contestant from each episode will be selected to compete in the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, the 20 contestants, along with five reserve contestants, will compete in five more episodes. Five contestants will compete in each episode, with one contestant from each episode advancing to the finals.

The competitions will be broadcast in a special program in collaboration with Qatar TV during the holy month of Ramadan.

The jury for the award consists of six members: three certified Quran reciters specializing in the rules and principles of Tajweed, and three experts in the rules and beauty and melody of the voice.

The Katara Cultural Foundation will produce a CD of the first place winner’s recitation of the entire Quran at Katara Studios.

The total cash prize for the Katara Prize for Quran Recitation is QAR 1.5 million. The first place winner will receive QAR 500,000, the second place winner will receive QAR 400,000, the third, fourth and fifth place winners will be awarded QAR 300,000, QAR 200,000 and QAR 100,000, respectively.

Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments) and Islamic Affairs has been the official sponsor of the Katara Prize for Quran Recitation since its inception in 2017.
