IQNA – A new educational initiative named Furqan has been launched in Nouakchott to help orphaned students improve their memorization and recitation of the Holy Quran.

Mauritania: ‘Furqan’ Programme Launched to Enhance Quran Learning for Orphaned Students

The year-long programme aims to strengthen students’ mastery of Quranic learning through structured instruction and practice. It focuses on both accuracy in recitation and understanding of the text.

The initiative is being implemented by Qatar Charity, with support from private donors, as part of its broader educational and cultural activities in Mauritania, Qatar Tribune reported on Tuesday.

According to Souleimane Cheikh Hamdi, acting director of programmes and projects at Qatar Charity’s Mauritania office, the programme reflects an approach that combines moral upbringing with knowledge development.

He said that sixty orphaned students—divided equally between boys and girls from three regions of Nouakchott—will take part in the training sessions.

A participant’s mother, Nanana Mohamed Assisah, expressed appreciation for projects that assist orphans and low-income families. One of the students, Zawiya bint Mohamed, said the programme helps shape character and strengthen participants’ sense of purpose.

The Furqan initiative, introduced last year, includes a variety of activities designed to enhance Quranic education and promote ethical values among young learners. It has been carried out in several countries and continues to expand.

The project operates under Qatar Charity’s larger sponsorship network, known as Rofaqa, which supports more than 226,000 people worldwide. The network offers educational, social, and vocational assistance to orphans, families in need, persons with disabilities, and students.
