“The Imam Hussein (AS) movement is considered one of the greatest reform movements in human history due to its absolute rejection of political and social injustice and the revival of noble principles and values,” Sayid Muhammad al-Taliqani wrote in an article on the occasion of Imam Hussein’s (AS) birth anniversary. Excerpts from his article are as follows:
The goal of Imam Hussein's (AS) reform movement was to revive religion, thought, and belief. This was achieved by reforming a nation that was under the rule of evil and oppression, by freeing it from the depths of decadence to dignity, honor, and breathing the spirit of faith and truth into it, so that this nation could rise again after surrendering to its deplorable state.
The Imam Hussein (AS) movement is considered one of the greatest reform movements in human history due to its absolute rejection of political and social injustice and the revival of noble principles and values in the hearts and minds of all generations throughout history.
This movement also aimed to create a spirit of mobilization in the nation to confront the ruler's deviation, while at the same time creating a systematic political program for a just ruler and laying the foundations for all reformers throughout history, namely preserving human dignity, resisting tyrannical rule, and rejecting slavery. This movement is the road map that Imam Hussein (AS) has drawn for us and our religious authorities have followed throughout history.
In the blessed days of the anniversary of the birth of Imam Hussein (AS), while we live in a time of political, ideological and social strife and turmoil, how much we need to reflect on ourselves and follow the road map that Imam Hussein (AS) has drawn for us through his reform movement. This road map requires the absolute rejection of all forms of injustice and tyranny and our commitment to the rights of the oppressed, especially the Iraqi people, who pay the price for every political mistake.
The oppressor thinks that God does not see him and has forgotten him. But this is not so. Because the eye of the oppressor may sleep, but the eye of God never sleeps. The day of reckoning of the oppressor is much more severe than the day of reckoning of the oppressed. So beware of the supplication of the oppressed, because there is no obstacle between it and God.
The Iraqi people, who have accepted the life of Imam Hussein (AS) as a path, a thought, a lesson and wisdom, will not allow the enemies of Iraq and the powers of global arrogance to usurp their rights. Rather, they will continue to keep the banner of truth raised until justice and reform are achieved.

On the 28th of Rajab 60 AH, the caravan of Imam Hussein (AS) set out from Medina to Mecca and stood against the ruling power, tyranny and terrorism, declaring, “I have not come out for evil or arrogance, or to spread corruption or oppression. Rather, I have come out to reform the nation of my grandfather, the Messenger of God (PBUH).” He, along with his family and companions, including his wives and children, crossed the desert and sand dunes, announcing the beginning of his eternal uprising to restore the foundations of true Islam, an Islam that the Umayyad oppressors sought to erase and distort. Mecca was the most suitable place to start his reformist movement, because it was a gathering place and a passage for Muslims from all over the world, and every event that occurred in Mecca immediately resonated. Throughout the Muslim world, this message was carried by caravans to every corner of the Islamic world. Every call that originated in Mecca quickly reached the ears of Muslims everywhere.
The uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) stunned the Umayyad regime because it originated from the source of authentic Islam. Imam Hussein (AS) announced the goals of this uprising, saying, “I want to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and follow the path of my grandfather and father, Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS).”
Imam Hussein (AS) was deeply committed to conveying his reformist message to the largest possible audience, and this could only be achieved through his migration from Medina. This is the most important reason for his migration, which is considered an extension of the migration of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Both migrations were carried out with the aim of supporting the religion of God Almighty, defending the values of the Quran, and preserving the principles of Islam.
Today, we are also witnessing the fruits of the migration in the cause of God, as the Shias (followers) of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) have spread throughout the world during the tyranny of the Baath regime (in Iraq). The Baath regime was overthrown so that the word of truth could spread and the banner of reform could be raised in every corner of the world. Thanks to the Shias, the voice of Imam Hussein (AS) reached every corner of the earth, raised his banner in every corner, and challenged all oppressors and tyrants even to this day.
