Hojat-ol-Islam Abdul Hussein Mu’ezzi will address the ceremonies, which will begin at 8 p.m. local time and elegies by Hajj Moulayi will be among other parts of the programs.

The center will host special mourning rituals on the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) from 10 a.m. local time.

Special programs in Urdu, Arabic and English have also been planned by the center to be held respectively at the library of the center, its main hall and the Iranian School during the first ten nights of the month.

Imam Hussein (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya in 680 AD.

They were martyred in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram which is the first month on the lunar calendar.

Imam Hussein and his 72 companions stood in the face of Yazid's large army, and were killed for refusing to pledge allegiance to him.

Muharram mourning ceremonies reach their climax at noon on Ashura.
