-- On the sad occasion of the 20th anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Cultural Consulate of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in conjunction with the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Zimbabwe has invited secondary school and tertiary institution students to participate in an essay writing competition.
Entrants can choose to write an essay of not more than 500 words on one of three topics.
"The best three entrants, along with 10 others, will be awarded with prizes on June 4, 2009," the Embassy said in a statement yesterday.
The topics are: the role of Imam Khomeini in fostering unity of the world's oppressed against the world's arrogant powers; Imam Khomeini -- the bridge between Christianity and Islam; and Imam Khomeini's Policy on Africa.
The competition is being held in tandem with an international one that is being coordinated by the Institute for the Iranian Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults.
Zimbabweans aged between six and 16 have also been invited to take part in the literary and artistic competition that aims to increase awareness of the plight of children in Gaza.
The winning works will be auctioned and the proceeds will go towards improving the situation of children in the war torn Palestinian territory of Gaza.
