Egyptian Woman Gets Jail Sentence for Insulting Islam
Fatima Naoot had voiced criticism on her Facebook page of the animal-sacrifice in the Islamic Eid of al-Adha (feast of sacrifice), RT Arabic reported.
She had described the ritual of sacrifice as the "greatest massacre committed by human beings”.
The post sparked widespread criticism and she later removed it from her Facebook page.
Naoot was convicted under an Egyptian law which states: "Whomever exploits religion in order to promote extremist ideologies by word of mouth, in writing or in any other manner, with a view to stirring up sedition, disparaging, or contempt of any divine religion or its adherents, or prejudicing national unity, shall be punished with imprisonment between six months and five years, or the payment of a fine of at least EGP 500.”
Eid al-Adha is one of the main religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year.
It honors the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his young first-born son Ismail as an act of submission to God’s command, before God intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instead.
