It was organized by the women’s department of the Tanzania Supreme Muslim Council in cooperation with the Iranian Cultural Center in the East African country.
The ceremony included various programs including religious songs and speeches.
One of the speakers was Salmi Kikwete, wife of Tanzania’s former president Jakaya Kikwete, who said Muslims celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to learn from the Sunnah, virtues and teachings of the Prophet (PBUH).
She highlighted the importance of acquiring knowledge in the Prophetic Sunnah and urged young Muslim girls to attach significance to learning while preserving chastity and modesty.
Milad un-Nabi or Mawlid is the observance of the birthday of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) which is celebrated either on the 12th or 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.
Islam is the religion of about 35 percent of the people of Tanzania. On the mainland, Muslim communities are concentrated in coastal areas, with some large Muslim majorities also in inland urban areas especially and along the former caravan routes. More than 99 percent of the population of the Zanzibar archipelago is Muslim.
