Offering Insights into Shared Stories of Quran and Bible in York’s Interfaith Week
The opening event at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Acomb, attended by about 70 guests, was opened by the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Barbara Boyce, cutting a ribbon.
The event, titled ‘Who is my neighbour?’ included inspirational talks from the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Barry Dodd , York Central MP Rachael Maskell, the vice chair of York Interfaith Group, Imam Abid Salik, and Latter Day Saints Church leaders Bill Kimberling and Mark Cosens.
Mr Cosens said: "Building good relationships and working partnerships between people of different faiths and beliefs is part of the year-round work of many people and organisations across the UK.
"Having a special week provides a focal point, so that more people are made aware of the importance of interfaith efforts.”
Events during the remainder of the week include an interfaith café between 1.30 and 3.30 pm Wednesday at the Unitarian Chapel in St Saviourgate, with all welcome to bring cakes from their own culture/tradition and activities for children.
On Thursday, between 11am and 12pm, there will be ‘stories for 3 faiths with Mary F Callan at Jacob’s Well in Trinity Lane - a theatrical one person performance offering insights into the stories of Abraham and Namaan the Leper, in the Bible & Quran.
On Friday evening at Old Palace Library in Deans Park behind the Minster, there will be Zaizenkai - sitting meditation and talks -with Rev Canon Dr Christopher Collingwood leading, with all welcome.
